Cross Train – Get Fit and Lose Fat!

Author: Carolyn Small

Hello Everyone.

I mentioned this in a previous article but I believe it bears repeating: The numbers on your scale do not indicate whether you are fit or fat. They only tell you how much you weigh. Far more significant than your total body weight is the composition of your body tissue. (Click here for healthy body fat percents.)

A small amount of fat is needed for padding the internal organs and as insulation under the skin. However, excess fat leads to such diseases as diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and gallbladder problems.

**********************************************************

Being fit decreases your chance of contracting diseases

while carrying excess body fat increases those chances!

**********************************************************

Many of you who are serious about your health work really, really hard to get those numbers down to what you believe are acceptable figures. But, you’re still fat…still in danger of having all sorts or medical issues. Don’t get me wrong, losing weight is good, but you must take your fitness program to the next level.

Winning the Battle against Fat

When you think of fighting fat with exercise, you probably think of hours of hard, sweaty exertion. If this is the case, then, you may not get any farther than just “thinking” about losing fat.

Why? Experts contend that when people exert more effort than what they “think” they’re capable of doing there’s a tendency to lose interest, become weary and dissatisfied. Hence, they give up, stop doing their routine exercises, and end up sulking in the corner with a bag of chips for comfort.

It’s at this point that a strong support group is worth its weight in gold. They will remind you of your goals and your purpose for starting the exercise program. They will help motivate you and get you moving again.

But what if your motivation level starts to decline because you’re bored with your workout program?

How do you combat boredom? Cross Training!

After some intensive studies and experimentations, health experts were able to come up with the concept of incorporating cross training in an exercise program to overcome or break the monotony or dullness of the routine.

Cross training refers to the integration of diverse movements or activities into a person’s conventional exercise routine. The main purpose of incorporating cross training into an exercise program is to avoid muscle damage, eliminate boredom and get improved results.

Cross training – 3 basic components:

  • Endurance exercises to condition the heart, lungs and blood vessels.
  • Exercises to strengthen the muscles. Because you’re doing a variety of exercises, cross training conditions the entire body, not just specific muscle groups. AND, since you’re not doing the same set of exercises every day, you’re not over stressing any particular muscle group.
  • Exercises to improve flexibility, speed, agility and balance.

Cross training is indeed a great way to modify the concept of exercising and losing fat without having to endure monotonous activities.

You can develop your own cross training program, have someone else, such as a personal trainer or, a fitness expert at your local gym do it for you, or you can purchase one of the many fitness programs on the market today. Two of the leading programs on the market are Shaun T’s Insanity and P90X. For more info on each program please check out Max Workout for the Ultimate Weight Loss – Fat Burn and How Does P90X Work? (Note: both of these programs are high-impact.)

In short, getting fit and losing fat does not have to be boring. It can be fun if you choose the right program to follow. Remember: everyone is not the same. You must choose the program that is right for you. If you don’t, you won’t stick with it. You will continue doing the same things that you have always done, getting the same results that you’ve always have.

Best Wishes for much Success!

Carolyn

How Cycling Can Benefit You

Author: Marcus Petercycling

There is no debating the fact that cycling is perhaps one of the best ways to commute smaller distances considering the health and environmental benefits it offers. We all know that cycles produce no carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions, are easy to park, produce no noise, are easy to maintain and can help rev up your health. But apart from these obvious advantages there are many other far-reaching benefits that cycling has to offer. Let’s look at a few of them here.

1.) Biking burns calories: It does not take gas to run a bike. The only fuel that cycling burns is your own calories! The more you ride your bike the more calories you burn and the more fuel you save. This directly helps you save more. So if you look at it, the benefits here are three fold. You save money, improve your health and help the environment at the same time.

2.) Helps reduce noise pollution: Although modern cars produce very less noise a collection of cars can raise the noise levels significantly especially given rush-hour conditions where the noise increases also because of the honking. Road bikes on the other hand produce no noise and there is no way they can lead to a traffic jam situation.

3.) Cycling helps you reach your destination faster: Believe it or not, cycling can help you reach your destination faster as compared to a car given a traffic jam or rush hour situation. Cycles have an advantage of moving faster through stagnant traffic helping you reduce your commute stress and time.

4.) Cycling can make you forget your sorrows: You heard that right. Cycling can help you forget your sorrows. How you ask? Cycling like any other forms of exercise helps increase the levels of endorphins in your body. Endorphins are euphoria producing hormones that help you get a sense of wellbeing by boosting your mood.

5.) Helps you appreciate nature: While commuting in a car we tend to miss out on so much that mother nature has to offer. There is no way someone commuting in a car can enjoy the scenery around him. Cycling on the other hand helps you experience the beauty of the locales. You can smell the nature around you, be it the fertile damp earth, the flowering trees or newly mown grass.

6.) You get to make new friends: Fellow cyclists can make great friends given the fact that they are sure to have similar thoughts as you do towards protecting the environment and staying healthy. A survey among cyclists reveals that deep friendships often result among cycling enthusiast because of the common ground they share.

7.) Cycles are easier to manufacture and maintain: Cycles can be manufactured with a fraction of elements required to manufacture a car. This is another reason why cycles are eco friendly. They are also a lot easier to maintain as compared to a car.

These are just a few of the many benefits that cycling has to offer. So if you have still not got yourself a bike, it is high time you start thinking about getting one.

Exercise Rowing Machines: How To Row Away The Pounds

Author: Brue Bakerrowing machine

If you aren’t already in good shape you need to get there. And don’t try to get in shape and lose pounds from taking pills or powder, you need to take on an actual dedication to your health by getting active and working out. Exercising three days a week for twenty minutes each session, along with a healthy diet of course, will give you the body you have always wanted (or use to have).

Don’t Use Your Age As An Excuse

If you are unsure if you are healthy enough to exercise consult your doctor before you work out on any fitness machine. Otherwise, no matter what your age or current fitness level there are exercises and machines that are right for you. One of the best exercise machines for anyone to use is a rowing machine.

There are a number of reasons why people choose to purchase or utilize exercise rowing machines. For some, this is a novel way of increasing strength and endurance. For others, using exercise rowing machines can shake up previous exercise programs by providing a new way of getting some cardio and conditioning in.

For a small few, a rowing machine can be used to burn excess calories. Yes, the words used here are “a small few” as most people opt to use more traditional cardio exercise equipment items as a means of burning up excess calories.

Despite being an excellent tool for burning calories, the rowing machine is not as popular as Nordic tracks, treadmills, or the stationary bike. This is unfortunate as exercise rowing machines can burn calories quite effectively while at the same time increasing lean muscle mass.

How To Use Exercise Rowing Machines

The common design of exercise rowing machines allows for the person using the device to adjust the level of resistance. It can be tweaked to be made very difficult to move or it can be adjusted to have little weight.

If you want to use exercise rowing machines to burn calories then the resistance level on the rowing device needs to be adjusted so that you are using little or no resistance and/or weight. This concept is common among all forms of resistance training: low weight and high reps equal definition.

Now, please do not fall for the fallacy of logic that low weight/high reps means muscle tone. This is simply not true. What really occurs is more calories are burned and that reduces stored fat and allows the muscles to “show.”

There is no such thing as toning a muscle as muscles can only do one of two things: get bigger or get smaller. Far too often, people only consider the addition of extra weight as the primary goal of getting better with a rowing machine. This is a limited outlook.

While increasing weight will aid in building muscle and strength, lessening the weight also has a number of positive benefits as well. For example, when you have little weight or resistance, you can do more reps and do them faster. This will burn calories as the purpose of using the device shifts from strength training to a cardio workout designed to burn calories.

Now that you now how to benefit from and how to use a rowing machine you should consider trying one. It can be a particularly good exercise for those who are looking for a good low impact exercise oppose to running, which can be jarring on the knees and back. Just make sure that you are dedicated and committed to actually using it. The machine won’t do anything for you unless you are on it.

What exactly is ‘metabolism’?

Author: Liam Taylormiley-cyrus-justin-gaston-running

Most people think they have a slow one.  We all wish ours was a lot faster.  The slimming industry has made a fortune selling pills that supposedly boost it… Even my local curry house is claiming that eating spicy food will make it sky rocket!

But what exactly is ‘ metabolism ‘?  Why is it important for weight loss? And how can it help us in our quest to fit back into our favourite jeans?

Your body is a made up of trillions of cells.  Within each of those cells are chemical reactions that burn up the calories in the food you eat.  The name given to all of these calorie burning reactions is ‘metabolism’, and the speed at which this process happens is called your ‘metabolic rate’.  The faster a person’s metabolic rate, the more calories they burn each day.

Try to think of your metabolism like an engine burning up the fuel you consume.  Put in more fuel than your metabolism can burn, and the excess gets stored as fat.  Put in less fuel than your metabolism burns and you will burn off your fat stores to make up for the shortage.  Long term fat loss only occurs when you eat less calories than your metabolism burns.

So if your metabolism is like an engine, how much fuel do you need each day to run it? The government recommends 2000 calories a day for women and 2500 for men, but this is guesswork.  To find the real figure we need to look at the three factors that make up your metabolism -   Resting metabolism, Movement and Digestion.

• Resting metabolism is the amount of calories your body burns at rest.  It is the energy required to sustain your organs and muscle tissue, even while you are sleeping.  The bigger you are, and the more active muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest.  Someone with lots of muscle will have a faster resting metabolism than a skinny person.

• Movement metabolism is the amount of calories your muscles burn when they are working, that is if they are working at all!  The more you move the more calories your body burns, so even chewing gum or fidgeting is proven to increase the amount of calories you burn each day, albeit not much!  Someone who exercises daily will have a faster movement metabolism than someone who is sedentary.

• Digestion metabolism is the amount of calories it takes for the food you eat to be broken down and pushed from your mouth to your backside.  High protein, unrefined foods require more energy to digest than high sugar, refined carbs.   Someone who eats healthy food little and often will have a faster digestion metabolism than someone who binges on junk food.

The internet is swamped with slimming and weight loss pills that claim to speed up metabolism.  I’ll make this simple.   There are only three ways to speed up your metabolism – increase your resting metabolism, increase your movement metabolism, or increase your digestion metabolism.  If you want a faster metabolic rate, you have to either 1) build more muscle to increase your resting metabolism, 2) exercise more to increase your movement metabolism, 3) eat better quality meals to increase your digestion metabolism.

No slimming or diet pills can do this for you, so it’s time to put an end to that little fantasy!  To boost your metabolism you have to start eating healthier and moving more, but you knew that already.

Weeeeee, The Wii Will Get You Into Shape With Wii Fitness Games!

Author: Fit Gamerwiifitboxart_2

Will a video game promote your good health? You bet it can, if its a  Nintendo Wii fitness game ! We all know the bad reputation video games have gotten in the past. It was believed video games led to a sedentary lifestyle. Parents have complained for years that their couch potato tykes do nothing but sit around day and night playing video games as their health deteriorates. And, of course, we all know the horror stories of how sofa tater children grow up to be sofa spud adolescents who can’t cut it in the adult world.

Some may disagree with these fears, but now, things have changed! Nintendo Wii video games makes these fears a thing of the past. A  Wii fitness game  mixes all the skill and fun of a average video game with exercise you would get, if you were actually playing it. Doctors and parents have all started to support the Wii. You may not burn as many calories as playing the actual sport, but, you will burn a significant amount and that’s a heck of a lot better…and more fun, than sitting there.

Just envision yourself on a tennis court, ready to serve the ball to your opposition. You enhale, throw the ball up and swing with all you’ve got. Now envision doing this in the comfort of your own home, wearing whatever you find comfortable. If you are not able to find an opponent to play against, no problem, you can just play against the computer. If, on the other hand, you have a friend (or three), you can all get into the fun. Volley the ball to and fro, matching your skill against your nemesis. You start to get into the game and begin to forget it’s just a Wii fitness game, and best of all, you even forget you are receiving an aerobic workout!

The  Wii game console  has made it a possibility. The action can be so close to reality, and the bodily benefits so terrific that some physical therapy specialists have in reality tied wii fitness games into their patient’s workout procedures, helping them to regain lost or impaired joint and muscle flexibility.

Senior citizens are even getting in on the action. It is no longer accurate to depict the elderly sitting around living a dormant life. Wii fitness games have been turning up in more and more elderly living centers. What was once seen to be a lethargic universe has again acquired fresh life, as the elderly are able to easily learn the necessary skills to enter into all the fun the Wii gaming console has to offer. There have even been Wii bowling clubs starting up in the centers, providing hours of amusement and most importantly bodily movement and exercise.

So, if you’ve been considering getting into better shape, or getting your family active together, then toss out your antiquated ideas and turn to video games. Provided you’re talking of the  Nintendo Wii gaming console , you can’t lose anything but some extra pounds.
